The SNAM Certification Program has been designed for both hourly and salaried school food service personnel. It is operated solely by SNAM and is a separate and unique program from the certification programs operated by SNA and Michigan School Buisness Officials MSBO. Individuals interested in these programs should contact those associations directly.

Benefits of SNAM Certification

  • Provides recognition that an individual has attained a basic level of expertise in school food service operations.
  • Provides recognition that an individual has a commitment to continued personal professional development.
  • Provides assurances to the broader school community that the food service program is operated by individuals who have made a commitment to improving child nutrition.
  • Has the potential for increasing self-esteem and pride in one’s job.
  • Increases the possibility of promotion to other school food service positions or higher pay because of knowledge gained.

Minimum Requirements for Initial Certification

1. One year of school food service related experience.

2. Must be a current SNAM member and must maintain SNAM membership throughout the period of certification.

3. Must have taken an SNAM approved 10-hour Sanitation and Food Safety Class within the past five years.

Note: Individuals who are certified by SNA at the time they apply for SNAM certification will be “grandfathered” into the SNAM certification program.

SNAM grants initial certification for a three-year period. Individuals must meet specific requirements during the three-year period to become recertified.

Recertification
During the initial certification period, and all future recertification periods, you must complete a total of fifteen (15) Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) during the period in order to be recertified. Continuing Education Units must be school food service related (business meetings and meal times do not count) and cannot be carried over from one certification period to the next. The following activities and programs will count toward recertification:

  • All courses offered through the Statewide Training Program for School Food Service Personnel that are co-sponsored by MDE and SNAM (please make sure you sign the SNAM certification sheet provided by the instructor).
  • All programs such as chapter meetings, area workshops, and school district training programs pre-approved by the SNAM Office for the offering of CEU’s (please make sure you sign the SNAM certification sheets at these programs).
  • Food Exhibitions: limited to two (2) CEU’s per year and a total of six (6) CEU’s in the three year certification period (send to SNAM office verification of attendance such as a copy of your show badge).
  • Publishing an article in First Hand News or other school food service journals counts two (2) CEU’s (notify the SNAM Office that you want CEU’s for FHN articles or submit a copy of articles published in other journals).
  • Teaching (first time for each course) school food service related classes counts two (2) CEU’s per hour taught (submit memo from educational provider).
  • Other school food service related activities such as home study or correspondence courses, high school or GED completion, study groups, or seminars or conferences will count one (1) CEU for each contact hour attended (please provide proof of attendance such as copies of registration or transcripts).
  • Each individual should keep their own record of CEU’s in case there are any questions.
  • For pre-approved events, SNAM will record CEU’s for individuals. Please be sure to sign the SNAM certification sign up sheet at each pre-approved program.
  • If you fail to attain the fifteen (15) CEU’s you need during the certification period your certification will be terminated and you will not be able to reapply for six (6) months or you must take another approved 10 hour class.
  • If you allow your SNAM membership to expire during the certification period, your certification will also expire.
