President’s Message

-By Martha Terry, SNAM President

I am honored and truly excited to serve as the president of the School Nutrition Association of Michigan (SNAM) for the 2007-2008 school year. I hope to motivate each member to be enthusiastic about their careers in the school nutrition industry and to be recognized as school professionals.

I recently attended three great conferences and took some wonderful classes about leadership, strategic planning and addressing current issues with a positive attitude. I will share the knowledge I gained throughout the year so that we, as a profession, can overcome the many challenges we face in our daily operations.

The number one thing I relearned was that it is a great help to strategically plan each of the goals you set for yourself so that you stay focused on the task you wish to accomplish. During my presidency, I would like SNAM to be recognized publicly as the professional association we are. In order to accomplish this goal, our executive committee looked at SNAM's mission statement, “Advancing good nutrition for Michigan children”. The committee came to the conclusion that since we are an association that services our members, we lengthened the mission statement to state, “To provide our members with the resources to advance good nutrition of Michigan children.”

Your chapter, area and executive committee leadership were trained this summer on how to strategically plan their year so that we continually keep focused on our association's mission statement. Each leader is motivated to provide you with meetings, seminars, classes, publications and conferences that will help you meet the many issues we face as a group throughout the year.

Those of us on the executive committee are here to serve you. You can find our contact information on our website, www.michigansna.org and we welcome your communication. Have a great start to the school year and, most of all, take advantage of the professional development opportunities SNAM provides.
